One of the crucial elements of meditation is breathing. It is your focal point – especially when you are beginning the practice.
What Is It about Breathing?
For one, we need to do it to live. For two, it is our breathing that can signal changes in our body as well as our emotional state. What happens when you get scared? You breathe faster and shallower. What about when you are upset? Breathing is hard and harsh but also shallow.
Someone could tell what is going on with you just by the changes in your breathing. During meditation, breathing works to help bring your mind, body and spirit under control and in the same place.

Focusing Your Breathing
When you begin meditation, find a comfortable place to sit and also a comfortable position. Your space is more conducive to meditation when it speaks of calmness, peace and tranquility.
Sitting is a great starting position. Keep your spine in alignment and your pelvis pulled under your hips. A large pillow or cushioned mat will make sitting even more comfortable.
Once you are in position, maintain a soft focus on the floor, the wall or even the back of your eyelids. You can keep your eyes open or closed.
