Paw and Skin Care for Your Dog during the Harsh Weather
Dogs that spend very much time in the bitter cold during winter months need special treatment. Their paws and skin may become dry and cracked which makes for very sore doggie feet. Here are some ideas of what you can do for paw and skin care for your dog during the harsh weather.
No one really thinks much about outdoor dogs developing frostbite or having adverse effects from the cold temperatures, especially since they develop thicker fur. The truth is, however, animals can be affected in the same way as people. The only difference is that people can take care of themselves whereas animals have to depend on their owners.
Be sure your four-legged friend has proper outdoor housing. You want them to be able to get out of inclement weather, especially if temperatures drop drastically before you get home and can let them in the house. Provide old blankets or bedding to help them maintain body warmth.
You may not realise that what you do to keep your driveway de-iced can affect your dog. Their footpads can become dry and irritated from the use of salt, magnesium or calcium chloride. Not only are these methods for de-icing harsh, they can also make your dog sick when they lick their feet. Try to find a non-toxic de-icer if you must use one. Otherwise you might want to try dog booties if your dog will leave them on, or wipe their paws with a moist towel and allow to thoroughly dry before they go back outdoors.
Take care to groom and inspect your dog regularly. Matted and tangled fur can cause your dog to lose much-needed heat. It also won
