Eight Steps You Can Take to Bring More Joy into Your Life
Who doesn’t want to experience more joy in this life? Sometimes it feels like there just isn’t anything to be joyful about. Or maybe you can’t remember the last time you were really happy.
Just waiting for joy and happiness to show up isn’t likely to yield great results. Like so many things in life, finding joy is a proactive thing. So here are eight steps you can take to bring more joy into your life.
1. Put It on Your List
Seriously. This simple step can help put the joyful thing back in the forefront of your mind. On your to-do list, refrigerator, dry erase board, or even a dry erase marker on your bathroom mirror, make a note to find joy. Then you’ll kick-start your mind and start looking for the happy things.
2. No Self-Condemnation
Believe it or not, many of us feel guilt or embarrassment at being joyful. Maybe we think “now isn’t the time” or “how can I be joyful when there’s so much pain in the world?” But the bottom line is, being joyful in the midst of sorrow and difficulty is an art, and an admirable one. Just because others aren’t happy doesn’t mean you have to join them. Don’t let yourself feel guilty about being happy – give yourself permission to be joyful anyway! You might find that it “spreads.”
3. Have a Silly Moment
Did you just have a ridiculous experience or funny thought? Share it! Text someone, tweet it, or post it on a social networking site or in an online group.
4. Laugh at Yourself
Really – think about how funny you must have looked or sounded just then. Find the funny stuff in your situation – look for humor in off-the-wall places. Take a moment and look at yourself and your circumstances from another point of view.
5. Play!
If you have any kids nearby, go outside and play with them, or find a way to play indoors if you can’t go out. It doesn’t have to be a sport – all the better if it isn’t. Free play like imaginative role-playing, exploring the woods, rolling down a grassy hill, or playing tag are all fun ways to get back to your playful side.
6. Smile
Just smile at people and animals – a dog in the park, a child in a stroller, an older couple holding hands. Smile at the things you see around you and experience the joy they offer.
7. Say Thank You
Thank someone each day (or regularly at least) for how they make you feel, what they’ve done for you, or how they have made your life better. This will help you both feel more joy!
8. The Joy of Nature
Getting outdoors and appreciating the fresh air, fields, woods, rocks, wildlife, or whatever you have available is a wonderful way to experience nature’s joy. It can be on the beach or in the mountains, or anywhere in between…just get outside for a bit each day if you can, or at least weekly. You don’t have to “do” anything – just be outside and take it all in.
Don’t be afraid to be joyful! You may find that people really like to be around you because you are so upbeat.
Oreo Truffles
1 package (8 oz.) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1 package Oreo Cookies, finely crushed
2 packages (8 squares each) Bakers Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted
Put the cream cheese and cookie crumbs in a large bowl and mix until combined.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
Melt the chocolate in a metal bowl set over a pot of simmering water, being sure the metal bowl does not touch the water. Take a heaping tablespoon of the dough and roll it into a ball. Place it onto the baking sheet. When all dough is rolled, place a wooden toothpick into each ball. Put the baking sheet into the refrigerator to firm the rolled balls, about 30 minutes.
Dip the rolled balls into the melted chocolate and return them to the parchment paper. Remove the toothpicks. Refrigerate the dipped balls for 30 minutes to set. You may want to decorate the truffles by drizzling them with white chocolate.

Water Filtration at the Tap
With the advent of bottled water there has also been an increase in water filters to answer the call for safer and cleaner water. Water filtration at the tap is a viable option for those who want better tasting water.
The battle between bottled and tap water rages on. Water at the tap comes from community water systems that are monitored by the federal government (EPA) for safety. Water facilities are required to report yearly to the government on contaminant levels. Any violations will be addressed.
Even so, water quality is still a question for people who want better taste and lower chemical levels – even if they are within safe health limits. One option is to further filter your own water.
If you have well water, the water quality is not regulated. Independent testing is needed to learn what contaminants are present in your water and at what levels before choosing a filter.
One reason for placing water filters on taps is for safer and/or better tasting drinking water. After all, you wash clothing and bathe in the same water that comes from the tap. But if you want cleaner water for drinking and cooking, this type of filter will work.
Tap Water Filters
This is how they work. A faucet mount water filter is easy to attach. Most just screw on to the faucet on your sink. When water passes through the line, it passes through a screen that removes sediment that is present in the water.
A block of carbon is used to further filter the water. It acts like a sponge to remove chlorine and other chemicals. Water flows slower through a filter to give the carbon time to absorb as many chemicals as possible. A tap water filter removes contaminant particles over 10 microns in size.
Which type of filter you use depends on your needs. For instance, tap filters are available in water bottles and carafes. If your family drinks a lot of water, then a faucet attachment is more economical than a carafe filter.
Filters vary on length of use and type of contaminants removed. If filters have to be replaced too often, choose another brand. Check to see what types of contaminants each product removes and if your water contains them.

Is Your Hairstyle Giving Away Your Age?
Don’t let your hairstyle tell the world how old you are! If you’re an older woman, it’s easy to get into a rut with your hair. But a new hairstyle may be just the thing you need to look younger.
Here are some ideas for updated hairstyles for the mature woman. But first, let’s start with some common mistakes that older women make with their hair that can make them look older.
Common Mistakes That Older Women Make
1. Too much/too dark color
Opaque, root-to-tip, solid color every month or so can actually make you look older. You don’t want monotone, dark hair even if that’s what you had naturally in your youth.
2. Skin tone and hair color should agree
Women often make the mistake of coloring their hair according to “how it’s always looked.” But your skin tone and pigment change as you age, and your hair naturally does, too. Generally, even those with dark complexions can look more youthful by going a bit lighter on the color. (Remember, nature was lightening your hair already!)
3. Know when your style’s time is up
Few things age your face like an outdated style. Sometimes older women cling to a style they’ve always known but that just doesn’t do well with their more mature face. You can even stick with a classic style and just update it if you’re really not wanting to let go.
So on to hairstyles for mature ladies…
Women Over 50
Short hair doesn’t have to be the rule! Of course, short hair is great is it’s what you like; there are plenty of youthful short styles. Let’s take a look at some of the style tips for women over 50.
1. Build body
Flat, heavy, sleek hair can make an older woman’s face look worn and drawn. While frizz is something you may have been fighting, ease up on the fight and let some body and yes, even frizz come back in. Think shine and bounce. (Note: stylist caution against “big hair” here.)
2. Layers
Whether you go with a few or a lot, layers are really helpful in giving mature hair more youthful fullness. Layers underneath your style can help fluff up your look, especially if you blow dry upside down.
3. A little freedom…
Did your grandmother sleep in those plastic rollers and then apply what seemed like a layer of shellac to hold those smooth curls in place? Honestly, nothing says “old” like helmet-like hairstyles. Let your hair have some swing and some freedom! Try a style that is low-maintenance and let your locks relax.
Women Over 60
At this age, short styles are generally the most flattering. But not always!
1. Spikes
Sassy spikes give women over 60 a spunky, energetic look. Spikes are surprisingly low-maintenance.
2. Chin-length
Many chin-length styles are flattering for women this age. Simple, face-framing layers and a side part can look youthful yet show age gracefully.
3. Pulled-back hair
If you want longer hair, try pulling it back into a graceful bun or chignon. That look can actually be very youthful and sophisticated.
As you can see, there’s no “one way” to do hairstyles once you’re over 50. There are all kinds of options – hopefully you’ll find one that works for you!

Grill the hot dogs. During the last few minutes of cooking, brush them with the barbecue sauce.
Spoon one tablespoon of the barbecue sauce over the hot dog that has been placed in a heated bun. You may add other condiments and cheese, if desired.
Unusual yet Delicious Homemade Ice Cream
People of all ages love ice cream but plain vanilla or chocolate can be boring. If you’re looking for a new, cool and unusual treat to beat the heat, you’ve come to the right place.
Ice cream comes in two basic styles; custard and Philadelphia style or sometimes called New York style. Custard ice cream is made from a custard base made from egg yolks, sugar and hot milk whisked together and cooked until thick. The eggs in this kind of ice cream make it rich and smooth Philadelphia style ice cream does not contain eggs. It does not need to be cooked and it typically has very few ingredients.
Go to any ice cream shop and you’ll find lots of specialty flavors – along with a hefty price. Choose to buy store-bought ice cream and you’re limited on flavors. Instead of being disappointed with the price or flavor choices, why not make your own ice cream at home. With a little imagination, you can create any flavor of ice cream your heart desires.
Here are a few unique ice cream flavors to get you started.
Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Ice Cream
3 large ripe bananas
2 tablespoons of cacao powder (not cocoa powder, there is a difference)
1 tablespoon cashew butter
1/2 tablespoon peanut butter
1 dash of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons vanilla rice milk
2 tablespoons raw hazelnuts or cashews
Add all ingredients except the nuts to a food processor or high speed blender and blend until smooth. Remove from the processor and place into a plastic container with a tight fitting lid. Stir in the nuts. Cover the container and freeze for about 2 hours. You may serve this recipe with fruit or alone. If you enjoy the recipe, you may want to experiment with making a larger batch.
Lemon Ice Cream
2 large lemons
2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup of water
2 cups of whipping cream
Wash the lemons and remove most of the rind. Cut the lemons in half to remove the seeds and place them into a food processor or blender. Chop the lemons until they are fine and then add the sugar and process until smooth. Add the water and allow the mixture to stand at least an hour or overnight in the refrigerator. Whip the cream until it forms stiff peaks. Fold in the lemon mixture to incorporate well. Place the mixture in your ice cream freezer and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
Strawberry Ice Cream with Guajillo Chile
8 ounces strawberries, hulled and cut in half
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon Guajillo Chile powder
3 cups well chilled light cream or half and half
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons lime juice
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Using a large bowl, add the strawberries brown sugar, cinnamon and Guajillo Chile powder. Set aside until soft and juicy, about 30 minutes Using a potato masher, carefully mash the strawberries.
While you’re waiting for the strawberries to juice, in a separate bowl stir together the cream, vanilla, granulated sugar, lime juice and salt. Pour into your ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Once the vanilla ice cream is done, gently stir in the strawberries.
Purple Sweet Potato Ice cream
1/2 pound sweet potato, steamed, peeled
1 can (14oz) condensed milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
Using a hand-held potato masher mash the sweet potato until smooth. Add the mashed potatoes and remaining ingredients to a blender. Blend well. Transfer to ice cream machine and follow the manufactures instructions for freezing.
Cherry-Bourbon Ice Cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk
1 cup half-and-half
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste or extract
1/2 cup drained and coarsely chopped canned, pitted cherries in heavy syrup
3 tablespoons bourbon
In a large sauce pan over medium heat, add the sugar, cornstarch and salt. Gradually whisk in milk and half-and-half. Stirring constantly, cook until slightly thickened, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the egg yolk and vanilla and whisk until blended. Using a bowl and fine wire-mesh strainer, strain the mixture; discarding solids. Cool 1 hour. Cover with plastic wrap and chill 8 to 24 hours.
Transfer to an eclectic ice cream maker and freeze according to manufactures instructions. Halfway through freezing process stir in the cherries and bourbon.
For an even more authentic homemade ice cream, instead of using an electric ice cream maker, you can make your own using a 3-pound coffee can and a 5-pound coffee can, metal preferably.
Simply mix the ingredients the as the recipe states. Then pour the mixture into a clean metal 3-pound coffee can and add the lid. Tape the lid down securely so it won’t come off. Place this can into the 5-pound can. Put ice and ice cream salt around the smaller can. Place the lid and tape it down.
Have your children sit on the ground and roll the coffee can between them. This will act as the same motion as the ice cream maker and will help the mixture to freeze. You may have to check the ice cream periodically as the children will become impatient. Alternately, you can sit in a rocking chair and place your feet on the can and ‘rock’ the ice cream until thick.

Understanding Headaches – When to Worry and What They Mean
Headaches are only too common. Most of the time, they are not dangerous or a sign of something more serious. But sometimes they are. How can you tell the difference?
Here are some tips to help you in understanding headaches, and knowing when to worry. And if you are in doubt, always call your doctor.
1. Migraines
Experts agree that these types of headaches, while torturous to experience, are not cause for worry. Migraines are characterized by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and seeing “auras.” Migraines usually come and go and are experienced on a somewhat regular basis.
2. Dehydration Headaches
Dehydration is not a condition to be ignored, so if you get a headache out of the blue, stop and think of when the last time was that you had a drink of water. It could be that you’re dehydrated. If you’re out in the sun or heat, you have more cause for concern. Rest and drink lots of water as soon as possible.
3. Sinus Headaches
These are annoying and often a sign of infection, but they are not considered dangerous. Sometimes they are accompanied by a stuffy nose and feelings of pressure in the face and head, and cold-like symptoms.
4. Tension Headaches
These headaches are not a cause for worry, although like all headaches, they can sure hurt. Sleep deprivation is a common cause of tension headache. Clenching the teeth can also generate tension in the head and neck area.
5. Brain Tumor Headaches
Interestingly, brain tumors do not always involve a headache. They can, though. If you have a headache that just isn’t characteristic and doesn’t seem to go away, it could be a sign of a tumor at the back or base of the head. It can feel a lot like a tension headache. It’s a good idea to check with your doctor if you just can’t explain a persistent headache.
6. Aneurisms
When blood vessels “inflate” as a weak area, it’s called an aneurism. These certainly do cause sudden, severe headaches, and usually a feeling of weakness in various parts of the body.
Generally speaking, here are some more characteristics of worrisome headaches:
* The headache comes on suddenly
* You develop regular headaches after the age of 50
* You’ve had a recent head injury or “bump” on the head
* The headache is accompanied by other mental or psychological symptoms, such as confusion
* Dilate pupils with a headache can mean a concussion
* You have experienced headaches off and on before, but now the pattern has changed.
Most of the time, a headache is not a problem. But if you’re in doubt, call a doctor. It could be something to worry about.
Macaroni and Cheese Revolution
2 cups dried pasta
2 1/2 cups milk (Use skim if you want to cut back on fat)
1 cup loosely packed cheddar cheese, shredded by hand
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp Dijon mustard (optional or can substitute nutmeg instead) (start with a little and add more to taste)
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
Pour pasta and milk into a small saucepan. Bring it to simmer and then reduce the heat to low. Cook the pasta at this temperature for 20 to 25 minutes or until pasta is soft. Stir the mixture often and be sure the milk does not boil.
Remove the macaroni from the heat and add the cheese. Season with salt to taste and stir it to combine. Stir in the remaining spices a little at a time, to taste. Cover the pan and let the mixture stand for a couple of minutes. Remove the lid and stir again. If is not creamy enough, you can add milk a little at a time, and gently stir.
It is not necessary, but you may bake the macaroni and cheese it at this point. Pour it into a baking dish and sprinkle a generous portion of cheese on top. Bake the macaroni and cheese at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

Summertime Camping, Summertime Fun
Does your family enjoy camping? Many consider summertime camping to be a requirement for the summer months. They know summertime camping equals summertime fun.
If your family hasn’t gone camping in recent years, you may want to think about the following when you make plans: Where to go, what to take, safety concerns, costs and what to do about weather.
Where to go: There are so many places you can choose to go camping. National and State Parks offer different types of camping based on your family’s interests. Do you want all the amenities? Check out a cabin. Do you want to ‘rough it’? Most parks will also offer primitive camping. You can also contact your local Chamber of Commerce or the internet to see where other camping is available in your area.
What to take: What you decide to take camping will depend upon where you end up going. If you are going to a campground that has full hook-ups for electricity and water, you may already have everything you need in a camper. If you are going somewhere that only allows a tent, you will need a tarp, tent, sleeping bags, blankets, pillow, clothing, food for the entire trip and a first aid kit. You may also find prepared packing lists online that will help you ensure you have everything you need.
Safety concerns: Whenever you take a camping trip, it is important to carry a well-stocked first aid kit. You will want to have poison ivy medicine and plenty of water as well. Think about where you will be camping. How close are you to the nearest hospital should it be needed? How soon can you get help if it is warranted?
Costs: Costs will also depend upon where you decide to camp. National Parks can cost as little as $10 per day, but they can also cost more depending upon the facilities you choose. Similarly, state parks will have varying prices depending upon which state you live in and which park you choose.
Weather concerns: Keep an eye on what the weather is expected to be as you prepare for your camping trip. You will also want to listen to the radio for weather reports on your way to your designated campground. Plan to set up early enough so you can see where shelters are in case the weather changes unexpectedly. You will also want to make alternative arrangements if you think the weather may be a problem.
One thing to consider, especially if cost is a concern and you are unsure how your children will react to camping is to plan a backyard camping trip. This will allow you to have everything you need, especially a readily accessible bathroom, within easy reach. If the children get too scared sleeping “away from home,
Summer Activities to do with Dad
Father’s Day comes at the perfect time of year – during the summer when there are so many great activities your children can enjoy with Dad. What are some outdoor activities your children can plan with Dad? Consider the following ideas.
Camping – This is one great activity for children to enjoy with their fathers or other significant men in their lives. Does it mean you have to pack up a car, drive a long distance and find a secluded campground spot to enjoy camping? Absolutely not! If a long drive and spending a whole week camping isn’t possible, why not pitch a tent in the back yard? The important thing isn’t where you camp or for how long; the important thing is that children and the important men in their lives share the time together.
Fishing – What man doesn’t enjoy throwing a line in the water and seeing what he can catch? If the men in your children’s lives, or even some women, want to spend a quality day with the children, make plans to go fishing. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive fishing tackle. If money is an issue, you may be able to fish with a cane pole without a license and children do not require a fishing license. Of course, you will want to confirm your own county or state fishing license.
Swimming – Perhaps fishing isn’t possible because the children are queasy touching fish or worms. You can still enjoy a fun time near the water by heading to the local pool or lake where swimming is allowed. Be prepared with sunscreen to keep everyone from becoming sun burned.
Hiking – Hiking through the woods is a wonderful activity for dads and children to plan for during Father’s Day weekend or any time during the summer. Find a local forest preserve with hiking trails. Pull together a backpack with snacks, water, sunscreen, a mini first aid kit and jackets. Let someone know what the plans are and when you intend to return home. It would also be a good idea to charge your cell phone before you leave and to check in periodically.
Cooking out – You know Dad is the king of the grill! Celebrate by planning a cook out, and if he will allow it, let him take the day off. Even if Dad does decide to man the grill, make sure everything else is already prepared so you can enjoy a great meal once the food comes off the grill.
Summer time, or anytime really, is the perfect time for children to spend quality time with their dads or other important men in their lives. You can choose one or more of these outdoor activities during Father’s Day weekend or find other activities that your family enjoys most.

Seven Party Ideas for Women
Parties aren’t just for little girls! Grown-up women like to have parties, too. It might look a little different than the college scene, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.
Here are seven party ideas for women.
1. Rent a Cabin
For a rustic, nature-intensive party, you can rent a cabin for the day and invite everyone over. Party ideas that are good for a cabin setting might be a bonfire or cookout. You could also go for a hike and have a picnic. If the cabin has an outdoor hot tub, all the better for relaxing while sipping drinks.
2. Slumber Party
You don’t have to be a pre-teen to enjoy a slumber party. They can be great fun for women, too, especially if you have a friend who really needs some extra support. It’s a fun way for everyone to hang out without worrying about driving home, so if you want to serve alcohol, it’s a safer option.
3. Makeover Party
Host a party with a makeup specialist who can give everyone a makeover. This is everyone’s chance to try a new look! The specialist can give a short talk, and then make sure you have lots of good food and entertainment for everyone while each guest gets her makeover.
4. Dinner and a Facial
Taking the “beauty” theme a bit further, consider giving guests a facial. While evening would be a fun time to combine the facial with a sit-down meal, mid-mornings would also be a great time for this sort of party. You could serve a buffet brunch, for example, and have a beauty expert on hand to do everyone’s facial. Or, you could have do-it-yourself ingredients or kits and guests could help each other.
5. Natural Beauty
You could also host a natural-beauty themed party and let guests choose from an assortment of natural ingredients to make their own cleansers, moisturizers, hair treatments, and face masks.
6. Fitness Focus
There’s a lot of focus on fitness lately, and for good reason. Exercise and keeping fit are vital for health. Why not host a women’s party where you have a personal trainer come and speak? He or she could offer gym membership coupons or special deals on his or her services as a trainer. Along with healthful foods, this kind of party can inspire as well as entertain.
7. Tea Party
The concept of the tea party has changed quite a bit since its Victorian inspiration. Of course, you may want to host just that kind of party – an old-fashioned, Victorian-style tea party with period foods and antique teacups. You might also want to go with a modern flair, and serve trendy teas in various flavors, iced and hot. You could have the party indoors or outside on a patio or porch, or you may want to rent a venue.
As you can see, there are a great many ways for adult women to have fun parties! Remember some of the little perks that make parties extra-fun, like favors and games, and you’ll have an event to remember.
One-Track Mind: How to Break Out of the Single-Thought Mindset and Open Your Mind
Do you have what is sometimes called a “one-track mind”? The expression implies that you can only think about one thing at a time, or that you always have only one thing on your mind. This can wear you out, and close you off to a lot of learning opportunities and limit your interpersonal relationships.
How can you open your mind? Here are some ideas for how to break out of the single-thought mindset.
1. Give Ideas a Chance
Those with a one-track mind tend to write off ideas before they’ve really heard them. Keep your inner critic quiet and really listen to people, even if you think you disagree right off the bat.
2. Let Some Things Go and Get Some Things Done
A one-track mind is sometimes an overwhelmed mind. Your mind may feel “too full” to take on anything new or different. Make lists, talk things out, write in a journal, or otherwise get the things you’re holding in your mind out so they won’t take up so much mental space anymore.
Maybe you need to make a phone call, resolve a situation, write a note, or something else; but the longer you think about the thing without taking action, the more brain space it takes up. Get some of those things done and set your mind at ease.
3. Be Quiet
There’s nothing like silence to bring you back from distractions! Taking some time to be completely quiet without television, electronics, music, or even conversation has a way of opening up your mind. The “one track” that your mind is on may be something like a rut – it’s just a groove your mind has worn. Taking some quiet time helps dislodge your thoughts from that groove.
4. Challenge Yourself
Whether it’s physical or mental, “stretching” yourself a bit with challenges can break you out of single-minded thought patterns. Try a new sport, activity, or hobby. Maybe you could try a really challenging workout. It may be something small, like taking a walk in a new neighborhood or volunteering to help someone you’ve never helped before.
5. Pray or Meditate
One of the ironies of prayer and meditation is that they focus your mind – this sounds like the opposite of an opened mind. But actually, prayer and meditation help you learn to focus your mind deliberately, and not just be a “slave” to repetitive thoughts. Learning how to practice one or both of these things may be a big help in breaking your one-track mind habit.
It’s hard to know just what, exactly, will break you out of your singular mindset. Try a few of the above suggestions, or come up with some ideas of your own. Hopefully, you will find yourself breaking free from your mental rut.
How to Get a Facelift without Surgery
The prospect of a surgical facelift can be daunting…not to mention expensive. Have you wondered if there is a way to get a natural facelift? Good news – there are some things you can do to give your face a “lift” without going under the knife.
Here are some tips on how to get a facelift without surgery.
1. Hairstyles
It’s amazing what a different hairstyle can do for your face – and the only thing that gets cut is your hair! In fact, you may not even have to cut it; just try a different style. Here are some tips.
* Create upward tension with a sweeping, tight hairstyle that sweeps your hair up and back from your face. Tuck hair in smoothly toward the top of your head, or pile it near the crown of your head. This can give the impression of higher cheekbones, and it causes the eye to move upward when people look at your face.
* Bangs have a reputation for making the face look more youthful. It seems like the opposite of the upward tension look, but it still tends to give a youthful appearance by softening the face.
2. Facial Massage
Facial massages can be done by a professional, or you can do them at home. This kind of massage stimulates circulation to the face, and helps give skin a smooth appearance. Here are some techniques to try:
* With a gentle tapping motion, run your fingertips over your face from the top of your forehead down to the front of your chin. Close your eyes and repeat this for a few minutes. It stimulates the nerves and blood vessels.
* Use your index fingers to firmly massage the middle of your temples. This helps decrease stress and tension, which can give you face a worn-out look.
* Massage your ears by putting your index finger behind your ear and your middle finger right in front of your ear (where your jaw joint is). Pressing gently but firmly, make circles with your fingers to relax the skin under and around your ear.
3. Acupressure
Taking the idea of a facial massage a little farther, you can get acupressure treatments on your face that can help give lift and tone to your face. Acupressure also is said to increase collagen production in your skin, which gives it a tighter, smoother look.
4. Facial Exercises
There are some exercises you can do to tone your facial muscles. Here are some to try.
* Mouth-firming exercise: Relax your muscles around your mouth while lying on your back. Make a “fish face” by sucking in your cheeks and puckering your lips. Hold for 5 seconds, then relax and repeat 5 times.
* Lift your brow by pushing your fingertips into the area right above your eyebrows while simultaneously raising your eyebrows against the pressure. Hold for a few seconds, relax, and repeat 10 times.
* Carefully press on your inner eye socket with your fingertips. Hold the pressure for 15 seconds or so, release, and repeat. This is said to help open up with eyes and reduce puffiness.
5. Firming Masks
Using a few simple ingredients, you can make a firming face mask at home. There are all sorts of masks you can make; here is one idea.
Mix together: 1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered honey; 1 egg white; and 1 teaspoon of glycerin with a whisk. Add white flour 1/4 teaspoon at a time until the mix takes on a paste-like consistency. Whisk until smooth. Apply to your face and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
As you can see, there are all kinds of options for taking back your youthful appearance.
Fried Chicken
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tbsp. salt
1 tbsp. black pepper
1 tbsp. white pepper
1 tbsp. oregano
1 tsp. dry garlic
1 tsp. thyme
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. cayenne
1 tsp. cumin
Heat the oil you will be using for frying while you mix together the breading. Rinse and pat dry the chicken pieces and allow them to come to room temperature.
In a large bowl or flat pan, mix together the flour and various seasonings. Stir the ingredients together until they are well blended.
Beat one egg and some milk together. Use more milk and eggs depending upon how many pieces of chicken you have to fry.
Dip one piece of chicken into the egg and milk mixture at a time. Roll the chicken piece into the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour and then carefully place the piece of chicken into the heated oil.
Turn the chicken when it becomes golden brown on each side. Remove the chicken from the oil and place it on a cooling rack to allow excess oil to drip off.
Six Multitasking Tips for Better Productivity
When you think of multitasking, do you envision being run ragged, or maybe just not getting anything done because you are doing a little of everything partway? This is a common view of multitasking, and for good reason. Just trying to do a bunch of things at once can definitely be counter-productive…unless you know how to do it.
Here are six multitasking tips for better productivity.
1. Information = Action
To multitask effectively, you can’t forget the “task” part of the equation! “Multi-thinking” isn’t what we’re talking about here. So when you see an email, voicemail, or text, take action. Either put the information on your to-do list or calendar, or take action right away. Don’t let it sit there unaddressed. While one email is being sent, you can add the other things to your calendar or list.
2. Toggling
Productive multitasking really comes down to toggling. You do one task, leave it for a moment, take on another, leave it, go back to the first one, etc. This works better than trying to write an email while talking on the phone, for instance, or working out your to-do list while writing a report. Do one thing and then the other – even if you don’t finish task 1 before going on to tasks 2 and 3. You can come back to task 1. The key is to use the time to toggle between tasks.
3. Follow Through
While toggling between tasks means leaving them unfinished temporarily, it should be just that – temporary. The ultimate goal is to be productive, so you need to finish what you started. Sometimes, this means only one task will get finished in the allotted time; but if you’re managing your time well, then the finished task will be the most important one. The others tasks have at least been started, which paves the way for them to be completed faster in the near future. That brings us to the next point…
4. Prioritize
It’s a good idea to prioritize your many tasks so that you can end up with the important ones finished and the less important ones still waiting (but partly done – not ignored). And for those tasks that didn’t get finished, make sure they have a place on the top of tomorrow’s task list.
5. Don’t Procrastinate
Ironically, one of the keys to productive multitasking is to do the tasks you don’t really like first. Otherwise, that unwanted task will be in the back of your mind, negatively affecting productivity.
6. Solicit the Help of Others
Did you ever stop to think that multitasking means you can sometimes ask others to do some of your tasks? Even if the task itself is specialized and you need to do it, someone else might be able to help prepare something that relates to that task, like printing something out or doing online research.
Don’t let multitasking scare you! There’s a way to do it effectively, and hopefully, these tips can help.
Making Popsicles with Dad
Dads are often busy fellows who get short changed when it comes to spending time with kids. But just because you’re short on time doesn’t mean you can’t spend quality time with your kids and have fun too.
Making popsicles can be a great activity for dads to do with children. Kids tend to have a short attention span but that’s ok because popsicles are quick to make.
The first step for dad is to head to the pantry to see what you can use to make popsicles. Look for juice, pudding, dried fruit, carbonated soda, Kool-Aid, gummy candies and more. Check the refrigerator for yogurt and fresh fruit. There’s an unlimited amount of possibilities so use your imagination and see what you come up with.
The easiest way to make popsicles is to purchase a set of Popsicle molds. These are plastic molds in the shape of a popsicle with a tight-fitting lid. Normally the lids will also include a non-removable handle. Pour or spoon the ingredients into the mold, pop the mold into the freezer and enjoy after the ingredients have hardened.
If your family doesn’t have Popsicle molds, no problem! You can use paper cups and craft sticks or even ice trays and toothpicks. Simply pour the ingredients into the paper cup or ice tray, cover with plastic wrap and then poke a hole into the plastic wrap to insert the craft sticks or toothpicks. The plastic will help the sticks remain upright while the popsicles freeze.
Here are six ideas you can use to create healthy snacks the whole family can enjoy:
>> Pomegranate Swirl Popsicles
1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
8 ounces of pomegranate juice
Pour pomegranate juice into the mold until it is about two-thirds full. Next, spoon yogurt into the top of each mold, which will take approximately 2 tablespoons. Using a knife or chopstick, stir the ingredients slightly to create a pattern. Add the lid to the mold or stand a craft stick up in the juice/yogurt mixture. Allow the molds to freeze for about 8 hours.
>> Watermelon Popsicles
1/2 cup of cubed watermelon, seeds should be removed
1/2 cup of orange juice
1/2 cup of water
Add the ingredients to a blender and blend well. You want the ingredients to resemble a liquid, but they do not have to be completely liquid. It would be alright if they watermelon is a little chunky. Pour the ingredients into molds or 3 ounce paper cups and then freeze. After an hour, poke a craft stick into each cup. Allow the ingredients to freeze for about 8 hours.
>> Pineapple Popsicles
1 cup sweetened pineapple juice
1 cup finely chopped pineapple
Stir the pineapple juice and chopped pineapple together. Pour the mixture into molds or cups. Insert sticks and freeze the popsicles. This will make about six servings.
>> Nutella Fudgesicles
1 1/2 c. chocolate milk
1/2 c. Nutella
Whisk together, pour into molds and freeze for at least 2 hours.
>> Beary Soda Pops
1 can carbonated soda (Sprite, Grape, Strawberry or Orange are good)
1 package gummy bears (or your favorite gummy candy)
Fill molds ¾ of the way full. Drop in several gummy bears; enough to raise soda level to 1/4 inch from the top. Insert the stick and freeze.
>> Fresh Fruit Pops
1 cup white grape juice
1 kiwi, sliced thinly
3 strawberries, sliced thinly
8-10 blueberries
Directions
Equally divide fruit among Popsicle molds. Pour grape juice into each mold to fill to given “fill” line or leaving about 1/4 inch space at the top. Add Popsicle sticks & freeze for several hours.
There you have it. Six delicious and fun popsicles you can make with your child in under 30 minutes.
Make Your Own Granola
Granola, if done correctly, can be a healthy snack for any occasion. Granola is a crisp wholegrain cereal based on oats, but you can use other grains as well. It’s slightly sweetened with honey, sugar or maple syrup, usually contains nuts and dried fruit and is baked to crisp. There’s also an unbaked, unsweetened version that is usually softer and typically referred to as Muesli.
Many ready-made granolas are high in fat and sugar as well as expensive. However, with a few simple tweaks, you can have an energy boosting, healthy snack for a fraction of the cost.
The whole grains in granola provide slow-release energy to keep you feeling full longer. So they make an excellent snack to take to work or school. By using natural sweeteners such as maple syrup, honey, coconut and dried fruits, you get a lighter version of the traditional snack.
Granola is also extremely versatile so you can add any kind of grain, nut, seed and dried fruit you want. As long as you keep the basic quantities the same, you can make a wide variety of granolas to suit your family.
Most granola recipes call for old-fashion rolled oats but it doesn’t have to stop there. Granola is so extremely versatile you can add any kind of grain, nut, seed and dried fruit you want. As long as you keep the basic quantities the same, you can make a wide variety of granolas to suit your family.
Here are some ideas for things you can include in your granola:
Grain – Oat meal (NOT instant or quick oats), rye flakes, barley flakes, quinoa, wheat bran
Oil – Coconut, olive or another healthy oil
Sweetener – Honey, maple syrup, molasses, brown sugar.
Dried fruit – Raisins, dates, sweet coconut, currents, diced dry apples, pears, cherries, cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, banana, figs, mango, pineapple and papaya
Nuts – Peanuts, walnuts, pecans, cashews, pistachio or almonds
Seeds – Sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin or your favorite seeds
Spices – Cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, ginger or any other spice that you like
Flavored chips – Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, peanut butter or butterscotch
Candy – Chocolate coated candy, pieces of licorice or red licorice
Flavoring/extract – Vanilla, maple orange or your favorite extract. You can even use apple juice.
A basic recipe for granola will look something like this:
3-4 cups grain
1 1/2 cup nuts
1 1/2 cups seeds (optional)
1 cup coconut
1/2 – 3/4 cup sweetener
1/4 – 1/2 cup oil
3/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 teaspoon spices (combined)
1 cup dried fruit (optional & added after baking)
1 cup candy pieces (optional & added after baking)
In a large bowl, mix the grains, nuts, seeds and coconut. In a smaller bowl, mix the sweetener, extract, spices, salt and oil. Pour liquid over grains and mix until everything is well coated.
Spread evenly on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Stir and bake another 15-20 minutes or until toasty brown.
Add fruit and candy, mix well. Allow granola to cool completely and store in an airtight container on the counter for up to ten days or freeze for up to 90 days.
Granola is such an easy thing to make and because of its versatility it’s something that everyone will enjoy. Try using different fruits, grains and seed mixes for a custom snack. Be sure to write down the measurements so you can keep track of your favorites.
Double Peanut Breakfast Bars
1 1/2 cups whole grain flake cereal
1 cup whole grain “O” shaped cereal
1/2 cup chopped dry-roasted peanuts
1/2 cup dried fruit such as cranberries, raisins, chopped apricots or figs
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup packed golden brown sugar
3 tablespoons peanut butter
Prepare an eight-inch square baking pan by lightly greasing it. Set this aside until you are ready to use it.
Pour the different cereals into a medium bowl. Then add the peanuts and dried fruit. Stir the dry ingredients together to combine them thoroughly. In a medium saucepan, put the honey, brown sugar and peanut butter. Bring these ingredients to a boil over medium heat being sure to stir constantly.
Pour the melted peanut butter mixture over the cereal and stir it until it is well coated. Press the mixture into the prepared baking dish and press it with the back of an oiled spoon to ensure it is even. Set the pan aside and allow it to cool. Cut the mixture into nine even pieces.
Top Tips for Hosting the Perfect Bridal Shower
So you’re going to be hosting a bridal shower! This special event will bring a lifetime of memories to the bride-to-be. So naturally you want it to be as close to perfect as possible!
Here are some top tips for hosting the perfect bridal shower.
1. Location
One of the best locations for a bridal shower is one of the bridesmaids’ homes. But this is not always feasible. Here are some other ideas:
* Weather permitting, a local park can be a great idea. If it’s mid-summer, you can decorate with lots of citronella candles and have insect repellent handy. In the spring, an outdoor tent or picnic shelter would work. In the fall, you can build a fire and have a cookout at the shower.
* A church or other house of worship can be a great place for a shower. Most such places have a social “hall” or gathering place where such events are held.
* Local recreation centers are also good places for bridal showers, and they often have facilities that can accommodate lots of people.
* Country clubs or restaurants make lovely shower locations.
2. Food
One of the key elements to the perfect bridal shower is the food. Here are some ideas for today’s health-conscious brides.
* Set up or make your own yogurt buffet. This is a healthy twist on the build-your-own-sundae idea. Have several kinds of yogurt available, and then a line of fresh fruits and other fun toppings.
* Turn regular food into finger food. If you take this idea as a springboard, you can come up with all kinds of finger foods. Here are some ideas to get you started:
=> Greek salad stuffed into pita pockets, then halved
=> Mini taco salads – taco salad ingredients on corn chips
=> Little BLTs – on hearty crackers, spread mayonnaise and top with shredded lettuce, a small slice of tomato, and a small piece of bacon.
=> Mini sandwiches are always a hit – roast beef, egg salad, tuna and chicken salad, turkey, etc.
=> Fruit kabobs are also very pretty and popular. You can offer them with chocolate fondue if you like.
These are just some ideas for bridal shower foods. You can get really creative here, and remember to have foods that the bride-to-be likes!
3. Entertainment
Make sure you keep the bride’s taste in mind here, too. Don’t have silly games if she is the type who is made uncomfortable by them. On the other hand, if she’s the type who would be disappointed if there weren’t something silly and fun, then make sure to have some goofy games! Door prizes are essential to make everyone feel welcome.
4. Decorating
Decorating can be really fun. Here are some ideas for decorations to help get the ball rolling:
* Force bulbs like tulips, hyacinth, or paperwhite in individual vases or pots. Then have one at each place at the table for a sit-down meal, or decorate the buffet and tables with them. Guests can take them home as favors.
* Try dipping colorful string or thread in watered-down white glue. Drape the threads over blown-up balloons. Allow to dry overnight and then pop the balloons for a pretty bubble-like decoration.
* Make paper flowers using tissue or crepe paper, and then decorate the whole room with them. You can also group them or paste them on cards or natural branches.
This should give you lots of ideas to get started on that perfect bridal shower!
Baby Shower Ideas: Themes and Tips
Baby showers create memories and provide much-needed baby items. It’s a fun time where other moms can share their wisdom and experience as well. If you are throwing a baby shower, you want it to be a memorable occasion.
Here are some baby shower ideas and tips for themes, decorations, and so forth.
Themes
You don’t have to choose a theme, but it can make choosing the menu, decorations, and games a bit easier. Here are some theme ideas if you want to go that route.
1. Eco-friendly baby shower
Going green (instead of pink or blue!) is trendy these days. This is the perfect theme for a mom-to-be who doesn’t know (or hasn’t shared) the gender of her baby. You can ask guests to bring green or yellow items, and you can decorate accordingly. No paper invitations for this one!
2. Spring showers
Since it’s a baby shower, why not run with that theme? Decorate with umbrellas, raindrop shapes, and clouds. This is especially good for a springtime shower.
3. Bugs
Bees and ladybugs are especially cute themes for a baby shower. Guests can give bedroom items like sheets and pillows in this theme, too. Flowers can be used in decorating, along with bumble bee and ladybug cut-outs.
4. Teapots and teacups
This is another great theme with lots of food and decorating ideas. You can also give tea-related items as favors, which are easy to put together and fun to receive.
Tips
Here are some tips for a great baby shower.
1. Spoil the mom
As many moms know, once the baby gets here, Mom isn’t going to have much time for self-care. Take the opportunity at the shower to give her a massage. Continue with the beauty and spa theme by setting up an area where Mom and guests can get their nails done, and by having individual areas set up for makeovers and/or facials.
2. Keep games fun and tasteful
Don’t get stuck in the usual baby shower games rut. Try something different, like having guests bring in a baby picture and letting everyone guess whose picture is whose. Have prizes for the winners and make sure that you don’t push Mom into doing anything she’s uncomfortable with.
3. Give guests time
Etiquette says that invitations should go out at least three weeks before the shower. This gives people time to get a gift and to arrange their schedules accordingly.
Hosting a baby shower is a lot of work; these ideas are just the beginning! But hosting a baby shower can also be a lot of fun.
